Resembling the scale of an alligator, this problem progresses with slight cracking or “checking,” which occurs when paint film cracks on one layer or more. These cracks may not reach the surface of the paint and grow wider and deeper, which can break through top and bottom coats. Noticeable breaks will appear over the entire surface area if proper prevention techniques are not introduced.
Causes
This issue is caused by a lack of bonding between the topcoat and glossy finishes or when the application of a hard rigid coat is placed over a flexible coating and affects the paints’ elasticity. A few more causes relate to the natural aging processes of oil-based paints in extreme climates, applying more coats before allowing the paint to adequately dry or applying too much paint per coat. When paints are subjected to constant freezing and thawing conditions, this also results in loss of the paints’ elasticity.
Solutions
First expose the bare surface by scraping, sanding or using chemical paint remover. Then remove any dust and allow the surface to completely dry. Then apply a high quality latex Primer to the surface and again allow it to dry. Be sure to use high quality primers and finishes.
Tip: When working with liquid removers or chemicals, be sure to use dust masks, respirators and eye protection as well as wear long sleeves and gloves.
